Background
While at Mesa Fire and Medical Department I joined and volunteered with the City of Mesa’s “Mesa AZ en Español” team. The city formed this team with the initiative of utilizing Facebook to bridging a digital communications gap with a large group of constituents who were historically underserved.
Within these engagements, I had the opportunity to connect with the Census and Redistricting Administrator who was leading City of Mesa’s 2020 Census Taskforce. Comprising engaged diverse community members, including small business owners, educators, parents, faith leaders, and more, the Taskforce identified strategic avenues to educate, engage, and inspire Mesa residents to participate in the 2020 Census. This collective effort resulted in the creation of the city’s "iCount 2020" campaign, and I was contracted to contribute my graphic design expertise to meet the campaign's visual needs.
Objective
Design bilingual projects in Spanish and English, tailored with overarching campaign branding that will inform and educate City of Mesa constituents about the 2020 Census. With the goal to generate the largest possible self-response, reducing the number of households requiring follow-up.
Research
• Brief on characteristics of Mesa constituents, drawing on my residency in Mesa since 1995.
• Studied "2020 Census Barriers, Attitudes, and Motivators Study Survey Report" and their results of held focus groups to have a birds I view of what were some of the barriers, attitudes, and motivators.
